3 MONTH INTERNSHIP PROJECT TASKS

TASK 1 – BUSINESS CASE DEVELOPMENT

No programme of work can be completed without funding! A business analyst is often brought early on in a project in to assist a project manager with drafting a business case. You will work hand-in-hand with your project manager and other business analysts to draft the expected business benefits of the programme to be completed within the 3 month period. Your PM will guide you in the dos and don’ts in business case development to ensure sign-off from the programme sponsor.

TASK 2 – AS-IS ANALYSIS

One of the major strengths of a business analyst is to simplify complex processes/systems for the benefit of senior stakeholders. During this task you will be asked to simplify a complex system using a technique known as case modelling. This will provide a comprehensive picture of how the company works today (AS-IS), from which you can benchmark future improvements.

TASK 3 – TARGET OPERATING MODEL

Creating a target operating model and telling a company how it will work in the future is often seen as the area where a business analyst “makes their money”. During your career as a business analyst, it is unlikely that you’ll work on a project for a significant period of time without creating a target operating model. During your 3 month internship, we will show you how to use Draw.IO to produce a professional Target Operating Model.

TASK 4 – BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS/ USER STORIES

Business requirements/user stories are short simple descriptions of a feature from a person that desires a new capability (usually a user or customer of a system). After creating the target operating model for the programme, it’s time to draft the detailed user stories which will show exactly how a system will operate in real life. During the programme our project managers will walk you through the user story template, showing your exactly how to capture detailed requirements.

TASK 5 – DESIGNING THE SOLUTION

Towards the end of a project, you will be asked to create a mocked up design of the requirements you created in task 4 using an innovative web tool. Business users constantly want to see their requirements come to life. Gaining the experience to produce a mocked up solution will prove invaluable as you progress through your career as a business analyst.

TASK 6 – USER ACCEPTED TESTING/ BENEFITS REALISATION

Lastly, before any project comes to a close you will need to complete testing and a benefits realisation document. User accepted testing ensures that your product is functional before it is deployed and a benefits realisation document allows a senior stakeholder to analyse what benefits were borne from the programme. This completes the full project life cycle and will give you invaluable experience as a business analyst.
